City of Dana Point, California
It is located in southern Orange County California. Dana point is one of the only harbor cities that can be found in the Orange County Coast.The city can be reached easily via State Route 1, the city of Dana Point is a regular go to place for surfing and beach lovers alike. Dana point was a popular port for ships who were in the hide trade with the Mission San Juan Capistrano which was close by. The trading continued until the 1840’s In 1818, the Mission was raided by Argentinians led by Hippolyte de Bouchard. While in 1835 Richard Henry Dana Jr. who wrote the book Two Years Before the Mast and from whom the city was named, visited the area while on board the Pilgrim. He described the place as being the only romantic spot in this place and even wrote what he said about it on his book. The port is now a really busy and developed harbor which is very different from what Richard Dana saw when he first arrived in Dana Point. The harbor now has a copy of the ship he rode on which is now being used by the Ocean Institute. The harbor is a California Historical Landmark.
Then in 1923, Harry Chandler a publisher of the Los Angeles Times and General M. H. Sherman, head of the Pacific Electric Railway Company put up a big real estate company to develop what is known as Hollywood Hills today. The project was led by an already prominent Los Angeles home builder by the name of Sydney H. Woodruff.
This was the start of the Dana Point Syndicate. They invited real estate investors, movie producers and company presidents to buy 1,388 acres of land which includes the headlands of Dana Point. They made sure that the community they built had all the needed necessities like paved tree lined streets, telephones, electricity, sidewalks, and other amenities. The company managed to build 35 homes and many commercial buildings.
These houses are the center of Dana Point’s history, also known as Lantern Village. It is called the Lantern Village because the streets have colored lantern names. The groundbreaking was done in 1930 and a 135 foot shaft was made for an elevator that would give the guests access to the beach. However, the Great Depression caused a stop in the construction and while Woodruff kept trying to keep the community intact, he had to sell the holdings for the Dana Point Syndicate.
Today, Dana point has become a home not only to wave riders, but to a busy harbor lined with local restaurants that provide a varied selection of food choices and many specialty shops that attract visitors by the thousands. Every September, Dana Point celebrates the Tall Ships festival. This event is a gathering of graceful Tall Ships that line the harbor and give an old fashioned feeling of riding the waves on these huge ships of yesterday.
