Known as the entrance to the Peninsula, Daly City is located immediately south of San Francisco. It is located next to the San Bruno Mountain which is a State and County Park that has the distinction of being the highest peak in the area.
Like most areas in the California region, the Ohlones, a group of Native Americans occupied the area now known as Daly City. It was only in the year 1776, when Europeans made an effort to colonize the California Area. In this instance, an expedition led by Don Gaspar de Portola established the Presidio near the entrance of the Bay and a mission in what is known as San Francisco . Then in 1778 they made a trail connecting San Francisco to the rest of California. They found a gap between the San Bruno Mountains and the hills on the coast and called it La Portezuela which later became the center of Daly City which is now referred to as the Top of the Hill.
During the Spanish time, the land between the San Bruno Mountains and the Pacific was largely uninhabited. It was after California gained independence from Spain when the area that was going to be Daly City was divided among three different land parcel owners. The first ranch was called the Rancho Buri-Buri and was given to Jose Sanchez, the second partition, was called Rancho Laguna de la Merced, and the third was called Rancho Canada de Guadalupe.
During the American Civil War, Daly was the site of a duel between two well known political leaders. David Broderick, a U.S. senator from California and David Terry, a former chief justice of the State of California. Both parties were arguing over the role of California as a free or slave state. Their duel was considered the first shot of the Civil War.
In 1853, a young man by the name of John Daly arrived in San Mateo from Boston. He left Boston with his mother who died along the way. John got a job in a dairy farm. Soon enough, he was able to start his own farm at the top of the hill. Soon they had a bank, houses, a library, but not that many people. This changed when the 1906 earthquake and fire hit San Francisco. Population surged and Daly realized they needed to build.
It was in the year 1911 when Daly City was incorporated and officially named Daly City in honor of John Daly.
World War ll saw little improvement in Daly city by means of the war effort. All production was concentrated in San Francisco and the outlying areas. Daly City became a temporary boarding house for the soldiers going to war.
